A values analysis attempts to identify the values that are important to the coachee and influence their thinking and actions. To do this, the coachee is given a list of around 50 values (e.g. tolerance, freedom, honesty, family, challenges ...), to which they can add further values that matter to them if necessary. The coach then asks the coachee to choose the ten values most important to them from this list. Once this step has been completed, the coachee analyses the ten values again and tries to reduce the list to the five values that are most important to them. In the next step of the analysis, the coachee is asked to write the values down in a table in order to establish a ranking.
They then enter in the "with gain" column how much more they would have if they had more of this value (0 – no gain, 5 – maximum gain), and do the same in the "with loss" column. The points in the "gain" and "loss" columns are then added up and the ranking of the values is derived from them. In a further step, the values are related to the areas of life "work", "partner", "family", "friends", "hobby", "health" and "time for me". For each area of life and each value, the coachee allocates points, thereby answering the question of how strongly the value is satisfied in that area (0 – not at all, to 6 – very strongly).
